Urban regeneration specialist Ballymore has secured planning permission to redevelop the Knights Road site in Newham’s Royal Docks, east London, and to build 1,667 homes.

The new homes will comprise a mixture of tenures including affordable housing and family homes on underused brownfield land.

The scheme, designed by Allies & Morrison, will also include more than 100,000 sq ft of new public realm, as well as 86,000 sq ft of communal open space.

Located close to West Silvertown on the DLR, the scheme forms part of Ballymore’s wider pan-London development programme, which has a pipeline of more than 16,000 homes.

This follows planning consent secured in January for Ballymore’s Thames Road scheme also in Newham, with another 1,685 homes.

Ballymore has committed £1m of ringfenced investment towards improvements to Lyle Park, a local green space managed by Newham Council.

Chief executive John Mulryan said the planning consent marked an “important step in the continued evolution of the Royal Docks”.

“Our long-term commitment to Newham is based on a stewardship approach – creating well-designed places that support both living and working, and that can contribute to the area over time,” he added.

“We look forward to continuing our work in the Royal Docks in partnership with the council, local communities and local businesses to bring forward this next phase.”

Last month, a joint venture between Ballymore and Penta Real Estate secured a £179.5m loan facility from Barclays and Homes England to support the delivery of its Cuba Street development adjacent to Canary Wharf in east London.

The cash will support the delivery of a new 52-storey tower, comprising 434 homes, made up of a mixture of private and affordable units.
