RICS has partnered with The Retrofit Academy (TRA) to help its members develop critical retrofit skills.
The collaboration has been enabled by the government-backed Warm Homes Skills fund that has allowed RICS to receive up to 80% funded training on two of the sector’s most in-demand courses, including the Level 4 Retrofit Assessor qualification.
According to the UK Parliament Energy Security and Net Zero Committee report that was published in 2025, around 29 million homes will require retrofit work to be done to meet the country’s 2050 net zero targets, including working on cavity wall insulation, loft insulation and heat pump installations.
Hence, RICS has chosen to work with TRA on this project as the latter has upskilled more than 10,000 people, operating closely with the government, employers and industry bodies on retrofit training and professional development. Its mission is to educate 50,000 retrofit professionals by 2030.
Luay Al-Khateeb, director of the future innovation hub at RICS, said: “There is enormous demand for retrofit skills as the UK looks to meet its net zero targets for 2050. Surveyors play a crucial role in this work to deliver it at scale with quality and consistency.
“Partnering with TRA to deliver this training to RICS members made perfect sense. RICS is working closely with organisations across industry to mitigate skills shortages and this skills delivery partnership is a cornerstone of this work.”
David Pierpoint, chief executive at TRA, added: “RICS and its members are vital to raising standards in new retrofit professionals. This funding is a great opportunity to enter a fast-growing market for professional services.”
