The Trafalgar Buildings hotel will contain over 88,000 sq ft of accommodation and 387 rooms.

The building is at the intersection of Whitehall and Northumberland Avenue, surrounded by landmark institutions including the National Gallery, Banqueting House and Horse Guards Parade.

The approved proposals will redevelop three interconnected buildings, two of which are grade-II listed and were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, through retrofit-first approach that preserves their historic façades.

Zedwell recently announced plans to expand the brand by opening properties in Spitalfields and Bank in the City of London, as well as new locations in Oxford and York, as part of a pipeline of more than 9,000 rooms by 2028.

Halima Aziz, head of hotels at Zedwell, said: “The exciting revitalisation of Trafalgar Buildings is a major milestone for Zedwell and reflects our continued focus on unlocking complex, high-profile sites in city centres.

“Trafalgar Square is one of the most culturally significant locations in the capital, and our approach has been to carefully balance heritage, sustainability and operational simplicity to deliver a scheme that is both appropriate to its setting and responsive to modern demand.

“Importantly, it also introduces high-quality accommodation at an accessible price point, enabling more people to stay in the centre of London and enjoy its world-class cultural offer.”

Last year Zedwell opened what it called “the world’s largest capsule hotel” in Piccadilly Circus, with nearly 1,000 capsules.
