Real Estate Balance (REB), the membership organisation working to create inclusive workplace cultures in real estate, has published three new resources to help the industry close its senior leadership gender gap and support more mid-career women into executive roles, Property Week can reveal.

The resources follow on from a REB study of mid-career women published in March this year, which made eight key recommendations to improve gender diversity within the built environment. These were to: enable measurement and accountability; create role models and enhance visibility; identify talent and focus on development; demystify progression; support caregiving and continuity; develop career advocates; prioritise manager training and feedback; and foster cultural inclusion.

REB’s ‘Executive Summary’ document provides a comprehensive overview of the study and aims to enable leaders to understand challenges and practical solutions within the built environment.

The ‘Member Case Studies’ resource outlines how REB members are applying the study’s recommendations in the real world, with case studies from different types of organisations showcasing the diversity of practice taking place across the industry.

Finally, the ‘Guidance Note for Mid-Career Professionals’, which highlights the lack of targeted guidance in support of career progression, is designed to inform and empower mid-career professionals to advocate on their own behalf, enabling them to become important agents of change within their organisations. While REB’s study focused specifically on mid-career women, this resource can be used by mid-career professionals of all genders and backgrounds.

PJ Galvin, managing director of REB, said: “The challenge is well-recognised: there is a clear under-representation of women and individuals from minority backgrounds in senior leadership roles within the real estate industry.

“These new resources provide practical insights to help address this longstanding issue.

“Designed to help existing senior leaders quickly understand the challenges and solutions, they also empower mid-career professionals of all genders and backgrounds to take proactive steps. Based on the tangible, real-world evidence provided by our members, we are pleased to release these tools to help foster a fairer and better-balanced sector, and we look forward to seeing how our members and the wider industry utilise them.”
