Manchester City Council and placemaker Muse have submitted a planning application to build a new foodhall in Wythenshawe.

Located next to the site of a now-demolished Peacocks store at the Wythenshawe Civic shopping centre, the foodhall forms part of a wider £500m regeneration of the town centre.
Manchester City Council acquired Wythenshawe Civic in 2022 and was later awarded a £20m levelling-up grant to redevelop the site. The local authority added a further £11.9m to kick-start construction on a new 200-seater theatre, dubbed a ‘culture hub’, on the site.
Joel Chandler, senior development manager at Muse, said: “We’re moving at pace with our plans to give the town centre the regeneration it deserves. The foodhall will be a hive for a range of local outlets and will provide new spaces for the community to spend time in and give the town’s night-time economy a major boost.
“We’re already talking with potential vendors about taking space in the foodhall following some great conversations with the local community about what types of cuisine they would like to see. The aim is to ensure there’s something for everyone and share the very best of what Wythenshawe has to offer.”
Councillor Bev Craig OBE, leader of Manchester City Council, said: “Listening to local people over the last year and more, we know that Wythenshawe residents want more from their town centre – more things to do, opportunities to spend time in Civic and night-time attractions that give the area a lift and attract visitors.
“This is the drive behind the culture hub. A place for local people with an interest in the arts to take part in creative activities, see a show or enjoy the cinema space – right in the heart of their community.”
Muse and the council also recently submitted three separate applications to create 422 affordable homes for social rent across three locations in the town centre – the first part of a wider masterplan to deliver up to 2,000 new homes over the next 10 to 15 years.
