Grocery retailer Tesco has acquired five shuttered Amazon Fresh sites as it gears up for a major expansion drive.

An Amazon Fresh store
The supermarket giant aims to open 70 Tesco Express stores by March next year, after opening 60 in 2025.
As part of the expansion programme, Tesco acquired five former London Amazon Fresh stores in Kensington High Street, Hounslow, Moorgate, Aldgate East and Wembley, which will reopen as Express stores before the summer.
New Express stores are also planned in Bickington in Devon, Pontrhydyrun in Torfaen, South Wales, Strabane in County Tyrone and Wallyford in East Lothian.
Tesco is also expanding its large store estate. Following the successful openings of new superstores in Ripon in November and Harrogate in December, two further large stores will open in Scotland in 2026, in Pitlochry and Heartlands.
“As one of the UK’s leading retailers, we support jobs and local economies up and down the UK, and as we grow our store network we’re delighted to have the opportunity to serve even more people, in even more communities,” said Nick Johnson, Tesco Group property director.
“We are hugely excited about the year ahead and looking forward to meeting our customers where they are with great quality, exceptional value and brilliant customer service.”
Amazon opened its first UK Amazon Fresh grocery store in west London in 2021. However, the till-less approach to stores failed to make significant inroads and last September Amazon announced it would be closing all 19 of its UK stores.
