A partnership between Lambeth Council and developer London Square has gained planning approval for a 228-home development in Brixton, south-east London.
The development at Brixton Station Road and Canterbury Crescent, of which 40% of homes will be in the social rent class, will feature an 18-storey and a 20-storey tower.
The scheme will occupy two council-owned sites, currently occupied by Pop Brixton and International House, which were established as meanwhile uses in 2015 and 2018 respectively.
The development will comprise affordable workspace, improved facilities for Brixton’s street-market traders and a new community and enterprise hub, along with improvements to public realm.
A spokesman for the scheme said it was expected to be delivered by 2030 but he declined to provide details of investment by both parties.
Adam Lawrence, founder and chief executive of London Square, said: “At a time when housing delivery in London is at a critically low level, our partnership with Lambeth Council will deliver much-needed affordable homes and make a significant contribution to addressing housing pressures in the borough.
Councillor Danny Adilypour, Lambeth’s deputy leader (housing, investment and new homes), said: “I welcome planning permission being granted for this important Brixton town centre scheme that has been designed to meet the needs of residents and businesses.
“In the face of the housing crisis, which is having a huge effect in Lambeth, and across London, we are determined to use council-owned land to build as many new homes as possible for everyone.
“The temporary schemes on these two sites have served the community well and brought activity to these spaces while these plans progressed, but it’s now time to secure a permanent future for these sites.”
