Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) has acquired Uxbridge Library in west London from Hillingdon Council for an undisclosed sum, with plans to convert it into a new campus.

The council decided that the 32,591 sq ft, five-storey building on Uxbridge High Street was surplus to requirements following the relocation of its library services to the Middlesex Suite in the Civic Centre building, which opened last April.

Strettons was instructed to market the property and generated strong interest from a range of occupiers and investors.

Sean Crowhurst, commercial agency associate director at Strettons, said: “This transaction highlights the continued demand for substantial, well-located town centre buildings where there is clear repositioning potential.

“Assets of this scale, particularly those with strong transport connectivity and civic prominence, remain highly attractive to education and institutional occupiers seeking long-term strategic locations.

“We saw competitive interest throughout the process, which underlines confidence in Uxbridge as a commercial and educational centre. Securing BNU as the purchaser ensures the building will be brought back into active use in a way that supports the high street and provides long-term stability for the asset.”

Professor Damien Page, BNU vice-chancellor, added: “Our ambition is to create a welcoming, modern space that promotes high-quality education, innovation and wellbeing, while contributing to the life and energy of the high street.”
