Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW) has launched the next round of public consultation on ‘The Croydon Project’ – its plans to transform the Whitgift and Centrale shopping centres in south London into a mixed-use neighbourhood.

The project aims to deliver around 2,500 to 3,000 new homes, new public spaces, including a major public square on the Whitgift site, and a diverse mix of shops, cafés, restaurants and leisure and cultural venues. It also plans to refresh and modernise Centrale shopping centre and revitalise the historic Allders building.

URW first published its masterplan after it bought out former joint venture partner Hammerson, after more than a decade of attempts to build a new Westfield-branded shopping centre in Croydon.

In July 2025, Property Week reported that URW was exploring a potential sale of the site, as part of plans to slim down capital expenditure. Later that month, URW launched the first public consultation on the redevelopment of Croydon town centre and the Whitgift Centre.

Adam Smith, strategic development director at URW, said: “The Croydon Project aims to reimagine Croydon town centre and restore its role as the economic and creative capital of south London. Our ambition is to create a thriving mixed-use destination with new homes, public spaces and a vibrant mix of retail, leisure and cultural activity that reflects Croydon’s energy and creativity.

“This long-term regeneration will bring new life and investment to the heart of the town centre. Community feedback will remain central, with this next round of consultation giving local people the chance to help shape the evolving masterplan.”

Progress is already under way on the project. New shops and restaurants have opened at Allders Parade, refurbishment of shops along North End is continuing and a planning application for improvements to Centrale was submitted earlier this year.
